Julia Christie at Lumas: 21st century landscape photography

I've been reading a lot recently about 19th-century landscape painting... it's interesting to compare the perspectival confidence of Friedrich's 1818 "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog"

... with Julia Christie's bleached-out, 21st-century landscapes in which the small human figures are swallowed up even though the beach setting is ostensibly benign...

Seems in some ways similar to Zen Sekizawa's work,
although his take definitely feels more carefree (maybe because the figure, even though headless, is closer to us, and positioned at the top of the frame, like Friedrich's Wanderer)...

Julia Christie's starkly beautiful White Sands photograph series available for purchase at Lumas. Thanks to Angela for the great link to Lumas!

It took me a couple of passes to realize that this wasn't JuliE Christie. This wintry Brooklyn day has me thinking Dr. Zhivago, I suppose.

Her work really is beautiful.

It's also always a shock to see a Friedrich image containing a human being.

Thanks for this post! Julia Christie's starkingly beautiful work transports us to another dimension, to a cosmic canvas. The feeling is overwhelming but calming too!

Those are all really beautiful. I must say, I'm hugely surprised. I mean, I don't really know these artists but yet they all speak to me. Even the old wanderer painting really says something to me. Just a beautiful vibe to them all. The old painting does definitely look like the period – and gives off a feeling of 'thinking'. The others give a feeling of freedom. Really wonderful.
